Reading the Dealer at a Real Casino

If you want a game that’s enjoyable and profitable at the same time, then you should definitely try playing blackjack. Blackjack is, in fact, one of the most popular card games in casinos, both land-based and online. What’s great about blackjack is that it does not rely completely on chance. Like poker, winning at blackjack requires skill. It’s a game where you have to make the right decisions at the right times. You have to know when to hit, when to stand, and when to split pairs. Basic blackjack strategy is mainly just a matter of common sense. You look at the dealer’s face up card, then you look at your current cards, try to calculate the odds, and decide accordingly. But there are two things that separate the pros from the amateurs – the ability to read the dealer and to count cards.

“Poker-Face”

This strategy is intended for blackjack tables where one of the dealers cards is dealt face down. One strategy in order to increase your odds of winning is to read the dealer. You have to try to decipher the dealer’s mind, figure out how it ticks. This strategy is something that poker players are usually good at. Poker players commonly try to figure out the hand their opponents hold by reading the minutest changes in emotions and expressions. This is the same for blackjack, only it’s the dealer you’ll read and not the other players. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s a good thing because, unlike poker, you only have to focus on one person. You don’t have to care a thing about the other players, except maybe on how the dealer reacts to their cards. However, it’s a bad thingbecause the dealer can be a professional and can be rather hard to read.

Happy Loser, Sore Winner

To go about this, you have to figure out what type of employee the dealer is. Does he enjoy losing so that he can get tips from the winners? Or does he want to win so that he has a high win percentage, increasing his chances of getting promoted? If he wants tips, he’ll be more at ease and be more cheerful if he’s losing. But if he wants a promotion, he’ll be rather cross if his hand is poor. Some players can even manipulate the dealer by acting like a total jerk. That way, they can be fairly certain that the dealer will take pleasure in beating them, and then they’ll have an easier time predicting the dealer’s cards.

Peek-a-boo

Another way to read the dealer is to see how long he peeks at his card. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see what his hole card is accidentally. If he doesn’t, well, just remember this. He will need more time to peek at cards with a lesser number. Aces, 2’s, 3’s, and especially 4’s generally need a longer peek. Face cards are very easy to recognize,so the dealer only has to peek at it for a short time. Another way to determine what his cards are is to look at where he places his cards when he puts them down. If he places his hole card right smack at the middle, then this means that he’ll probably stand. If he places it a little to the side, then this means that he might need to hit or take another card.
